Hands: Our Untapped Advantage

Image
While watching a dog struggle to lick its back wound, I realized how much we take our hands for granted. Imagine facing even minor injuries without these incredible tools! Compared to most animals, only primates like us have hands with opposable thumbs, granting us immense adaptability. This advantage extends far beyond basic hygiene. We can hold and manipulate objects, creating and wielding tools for protection and advancement. This led to inventions like the steam engine, computer, and even the nuclear bomb, solidifying our dominance over the planet. Now, Artificial Intelligence (AI) emerges as a potential challenger. However, as long as AI remains confined to the digital world, it lacks the hands-on advantage we possess. A physical embodiment might change the game, sparking a potential struggle for supremacy. History shows our tendency to prioritize material gain over empathy, potentially giving machines an edge. Movies like "The Creator" portray AI-human co-existence, but...

Why sequels are boring?

Today, my wife and I discussed why sequels or subsequent seasons of super-hit web series often seem less interesting compared to the premieres and pilot seasons. I argued that maintaining interest over a long period requires novelty. While characters in the first episodes are loosely defined, their capabilities and limitations become well-established over a season. This allows viewers to predict their actions, making the storyline predictable. Predictability, in turn, leads to decreasing interest. Creators typically counter this by introducing new characters, subplots, spin-offs, and incorporating fresh creative minds to enhance the narrative. However, all good things must come to an end. Therefore, creators should consider ending sequels when there's no compelling story left to tell.  Sometimes, the narrative itself demands a conclusion. In such cases, artificially extending it with minimal new content will inevitably bore the audience.
