Why sequels are boring?

Today, my wife and I discussed why sequels or subsequent seasons of super-hit web series often seem less interesting compared to the premieres and pilot seasons.

I argued that maintaining interest over a long period requires novelty. While characters in the first episodes are loosely defined, their capabilities and limitations become well-established over a season. This allows viewers to predict their actions, making the storyline predictable. Predictability, in turn, leads to decreasing interest.

Creators typically counter this by introducing new characters, subplots, spin-offs, and incorporating fresh creative minds to enhance the narrative. However, all good things must come to an end. Therefore, creators should consider ending sequels when there's no compelling story left to tell.

Sometimes, the narrative itself demands a conclusion. In such cases, artificially extending it with minimal new content will inevitably bore the audience.
